Mandy Gull-Masty, a member of the Cree Nation of Waswanipi, is an influential leader dedicated to advocating for Cree interests and sustainable development. She began her public career in 2014 as Deputy Chief of Waswanipi, where she managed key portfolios such as finance, administration, housing, and mining negotiations, contributing to economic growth and responsible resource management. A strong advocate for environmental protection, she has worked to safeguard Cree forests in collaboration with NGOs and international organizations. Her academic background in political science and public affairs at Concordia University, combined with 18 years of management experience, has enabled her to lead major initiatives. In 2017, she was elected Deputy Grand Chief of the Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Istchee) – Cree Nation Government, playing a key role in land use planning, justice, and environmental policies. In 2021, she made history as the first woman elected Grand Chief of the Grand Council of the Crees and President of the Cree Nation Government. She champions Cree governance, cultural preservation, and a mixed Cree economy as pillars of sustainable development for Eeyou Istchee.
