City Councillor for Maisonneuve–Longue-Pointe and Delegate for Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples

Alia Hassan-Cournol is a member of Montreal’s Executive Committee, responsible for economic development, higher education, the fight against racism and systemic discrimination, and is also the delegate for reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. Elected in 2021 as City Councillor for Maisonneuve-Longue-Pointe—a district undergoing significant economic transformation in the East—she also sits on the Ville-Marie borough council and represents Montreal within Montréal International and the International Association of Port Cities. Of Franco-Egyptian origin, she moved to Quebec in the late 2000s. A political scientist specializing in immigration and public policy, she is committed to women’s rights and diversity, having coordinated the Montreal Women’s March in 2017. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the YWCA Montreal and is an ambassador for diversity with the Group of 30. A former executive director of an immigration organization, she now works toward balanced development in her district, promoting social justice, inclusion, ecological transition, and access to affordable housing and sustainable transportation.
