Chief Pekuakamiulnuatsh Takuhikan

Gilbert Dominique began his career as the Recreation Director in Mashteuiatsh from 1985 to 1994 and later became the Director of the Native Inter-band Games from 1994 to 1997. In 1997, he was elected as a Councilor for the Montagnais Council of Lac-Saint-Jean. After serving two terms, he was elected Chief of the Pekuakamiulnuatsh in 2003 and was re-elected by acclamation in 2006. From 2010 to 2012, he served as Executive Director of the Mashteuiatsh History and Archaeology Society. Following that, he worked as a Project Manager for Education and Workforce Services at Pekuakamiulnuatsh Takuhikan. In 2013, he was re-elected as Chief, during which he led efforts to challenge the underfunding of the First Nations Child and Family Services Program (PSPPN). Before returning to the Chief role for the 2021-2025 term, he served as Executive Director of Innu Takuaikan Ushat Mak Mani-Utenam. Gilbert Dominique remains deeply involved in his community of Mashteuiatsh, focusing on youth, culture, economic development, and the recognition of Indigenous rights. His leadership approach is defined by dialogue, openness, and a commitment to fostering strong partnerships.
